Spain Tour

The Alberta Sunbirds Superband provides an experience of a lifetime for music students 14-19 that have a demonstrated desire to gain international performance experience.  From January – June the students will work with professional mentors to create a 35 – 40 minute diverse popular music program with the purpose of taking it on an international performance tour.

Musicians Wanted

What kind of musicians are we looking for?

  • Saxophones, Trumpets, and Trombones
  • Violinists, Violists, Cellists
  • Electric Bass Players
  • Keyboardists
  • Electric/Acoustic Guitar Players
  • Percussionist
  • Drum Kit player
  • All Singers (SATB) with some classic pop/R&B musical experience

We are looking for talented, dynamic instrumental musicians & singers to participate in a life changing experience, designed to expand the musical and personal horizons of its members. This group of performers will prepare an engaging show of iconic pop covers, R&B, to light jazz favorites. The musicians must be between the ages of 14 to 19. The successful applicants will have a good technical proficiency with their instrument/voice. They must have had some formal music education and are able to read music and/or charts.

COMMITMENT

The Alberta Sunbirds Superband will be presenting a 40-minute high-energy show. Auditions will take place Nov 19 – Dec 10. Successful members will be notified on December 15. Music charts will be distributed the first week of January. These charts will be customized for each participant’s strengths and abilities (with potential solos). Rehearsals will take place once a month starting Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023. The rehearsal location will be decided in consultation with the participants. There will be weekly Zoom coaching sessions scheduled at mutual free times. For the May long weekend there will be a 2 day rehearsal period, followed by the first performance in Alberta on May 22. (location TBA). There will also be 2 performances in Alberta in June (location TBA).

TOUR EXPERIENCE

You will visit some of the most exciting locations in Spain combining spectacular sightseeing and awesome performances while having fun with your new friends from Alberta and Spain.

The accommodation is based on twin.  All rooms have en-suite facilities.  Single Supplement is available upon request

Every effort will be made to accommodate food allergies and other reasonable food issues.

LARGER INSTRUMENT RENTAL

We are able to procure the larger instruments (drum kit, amps etc.)  We will discuss with those players. We will take care of the transportation of those larger instruments.

Travel Insurance

We do recommend getting travel Insurance.  There are many places one can buy travel insurance. We suggest people “shop around”, check with their own insurance providers, inquire at their bank, etc to compare plans and costs.  We do not endorse any specific company.  We do have a few examples of companies to help in the search.

Friends and family

Friends & family are welcome to come along.  We encourage them to come as there will be lots to experience and see in addition to the performances.

AUDITIONS

We ask that you send an email (see below) telling about your self (past performances and goals).  Please send a link to a video of yourself playing your best material.  You can post it on Youtube (unlisted if you want).  You may have some something up there already.  Please do not email video files.

After receiving the video(s), we will set up a Zoom meeting at that works for everyone’s schedule.  We are asking candidates to:

1. Prepare to play any 2 – 3 pieces (excerpts) of their choice – a max of about 2 minutes long.

2. Have an interview.  We would like to chat with you and your parents. This is an opportunity for you and your parents to ask any questions.  We will ask you some too.
